Workshops

Introduction

The whole school approach of the Love Local Food programme means that every child in participating schools will be given the opportunity of getting their hands dirty and learning how to grow their own food.

Pupils workshops and lessons

Throughout the year schools are encouraged to incorporate the core LLF themes of growing, cooking, sourcing and selling local produce into their day to day curriculum activities. Below are a selection of resources and links which should provide teachers with plenty of inspiration.

What you can do

Cookery ideas, lesson plans and recipes to use your produce. From simple salads and smoothies to soups and chutneys there are thousands of different ways of using up your produce so that everybody gets a taste.

Resources

Below you will find a selection of resources and recipes which have been tried and tested. Some utilise little or no cooking so are suitable for use with primary age children and others make use of parts of vegetables which may otherwise end up in the compost such as beetroot, turnip or radish leaves.

Green Tomato Chutney A tangy chutney recipe to use up any green tomatoes left on the plant either before you go away on summer holidays or in the autumn.
Homemade Tomato Ketchup How many tomatoes fit into a ketchup bottle? Why not make your own and find out! You could even do a taste test to see if it tastes as good as the "real" thing!!
No Cook Chutney A perfect recipe for primary schools as this is all chopping and no cooking! The recipe can be adapted to incorporate whatever you are growing...be prepared for a few tears while chopping the onions though!!
Pickled Marrow A great way to use up any of those monster marrows that appear as soon as you ignore a courgette plant for too long! These are a yummy alternative to gerkins and are great with cold meats and salads.
Radish Leaf And Potato Soup Radish leaves usually end up in the bin or the compost heap but could be put to much better use. They make a peppery addition to salads and taste great in this simple soup recipe.
Beetroot Leaf Curry Recipe Don't throw away the leaves! Although they make great compost they are a delicious alternative to spinach in many recipes. Why not try this simple curry recipe.

Harvest Festival

All participating schools had a harvest festival to celebrate their green fingered achievements and let the whole community see what they have been up to.

Fundraise

Plant and produce sales allowed pupils to fundraise to buy seeds and gardening equipment so that can grow even more next year. Get more fundraising ideas here from the download page

Farmers Markets

A trip to a farmers market can be a fun day out for all the family and you will have plenty of goodies to sample! Have a look at our local food supplier page to find farm shops and farmers markets near you, or you could even have a box of local food delivered to your door.
